ASSAD BROTHERS

Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have established a new standard for the guitar duo through a rare combination of virtuosity, precision, and expressive depth. Raised in a family deeply connected to Brazilian musical traditions and trained

under guitarist and lutenist Monina Távora, a disciple of Andrés Segovia, the Assads developed an ensemble voice of remarkable unity and flexibility.

Their artistry has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them, including Astor Piazzolla, Terry Riley, Radamés Gnattali, Marlos Nobre, Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Jorge Morel, Edino Krieger, and Francisco Mignone. Sérgio Assad has further expanded the Duo’s repertoire through his own compositions, written both for the Assads and for collaborations with other musicians, in recital settings and with symphony orchestras.

The Duo Assad’s repertoire moves fluidly between classical music and traditional musical languages, with programs that include transcriptions of Baroque keyboard works by Bach, Rameau, and Scarlatti, as well as adaptations of music by Gershwin, Ginastera, and Debussy. While occasional elements of improvisation appear in their performances, these serve as expressive devices rather than as an embrace of jazz as a stylistic genre.

A defining aspect of the Duo’s artistic path is its openness to cross-cultural dialogue. This includes a series of works by Sérgio Assad inspired by Chinese mythology and symbolism, such as Sun Wukong Toccata, as well as Chinese Zodiac, a cycle conceived for twelve female Chinese guitarists. This interest in cultural exchange also extends to broader collaborative contexts, including The Walls, a project with Yo-Yo Ma that draws symbolic inspiration from the Great Wall of China as a point of reflection on cultural connection and separation. These projects are approached as contemporary compositional and artistic dialogues rather than folkloric statements.

The Assads have collaborated with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, Dawn Upshaw, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and with orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the S?o Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and the Saint Paul Chamber

Orchestra. Their recordings for Nonesuch and GHA have received Latin Grammy awards.

In 2026, Sérgio and Odair Assad celebrate their 60th anniversary as a duo with a farewell tour across North America and selected international venues.
